Hebrews 5:12-14 (KJV) "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

Proverbs 27:17 (KJV) "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

THE INFILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT & SPEAKING IN TONGUES

One of the most controversial & most misunderstood teachings is the gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

I am convinced that there is so much antagonism aimed at this gift because of the incredible life changing power it releases into a believer’s life, that the enemy works overtime to discriminate against it’s truth in anyway possible. In the same way that many nowadays reject the prophetic ministry because of all the abuses that have taken place with, or have refused to accept the teachings of the pre-tribulation Rapture; so it is with the infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This is even to the extent of calling it unscriptural & or, no longer in effect for believers today, & or even some blatantly calling it from the enemy’s camp.

Let’s take a little time right now & search the scriptures & allow the Holy Spirit to bring us together in His fellowship that we might try to understand the absolute supernatural power of the Holy Spirit & how powerfully He can effect a believer’s life in so many different ways. May the Holy Spirit lead each of us & bring about His purposes to be known.

The infilling of the Holy Spirit is a gift from the Holy Spirit. This gift was first announced on the Day of Pentecost stated in Acts 2, which we all accept as biblical truth & proof of the Holy Spirit. We also know the Apostle Paul spent much time in teaching believers about the unique gifts that the Holy Spirit brings & with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Paul provided nearly an entire chapter of instruction concerning this in 1 Corinthians 14. At the same time he tells us we are not to misappropriate the baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit, or the speaking in tongues or misuse its intended purpose. This gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit does provide life changing empowerment to all believers, as well as a empowering tool in ministry & in proclaiming the Gospel of Christ to the world.

Now as far acknowledging the gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, like was mentioned, it is for every follower of Jesus Christ who has received His Salvation, because they are already in-dwelt with the Holy Spirit at the time of conversion. It is usually known to be an additional event after Salvation, although it does not necessarily have to be.

A wonderful portion of scripture refers that Jesus Christ spoke these words: Mark 16:15-20 states ...

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

(I encourage every believer to read several commentaries on this scripture since it really helps to give understanding in its word usage.)

Many scriptures such as these present a solid foundation in the gift of the infilling of of the Holy Spirit - is an act by the Holy Spirit - providing the evidence of speaking in tongues & it is for any believer today. We must also note that just because a believer does not speak in tongues, it certainly does not mean they do not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Christians believe & adhere to the doctrine of baptizing in water, which we also acknowledge is not essential to receiving Salvation or receiving the Holy Spirit upon Salvation. Still in the same context, many don’t accept the gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, which we also know is not essential to Salvation or to the initial indwelling of the Holy Spirit; but yet it stands as another portion in our faith that is available. It stands to reason that since we are willing to be baptized in water, which is an outward sign in our reliance & submission to Christ, shouldn't we also be willing to be infilled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues … which is also an outward sign in reliance & submission to Christ’s Holy Spirit?

Acts 8: 5-25 relates the story of the Samaritan converts. Philip preached to them about Christ & the people joyfully accepted the gospel & received Salvation. They confirmed their faith by being baptized as well. Yet, despite the fact that these folks were truly saved, Philip called for the apostles to come & pray for them that they would receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit. And, then it also relates how Simeon the sorcerer offered money to receive the Holy Spirit & was told to repent for his heart was not right before God. Here is the scripture Acts 8:5-25 ...
Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. And there was great joy in that city. But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God. And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

In the scriptures we see that receiving Salvation is not the same as receiving the gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit & we also know that the Holy Spirit is definitely involved in Salvation & in imparting His gift of infilling us with the evidence of each believer speaking in tongues.

The gift of being infilling in the Holy Spirit is purposeful. We can confirm & believe according to Acts 2:4, the initial evidence that you have received the infilling of the Holy Spirit is the ability to speak in tongues. Still, we must also note that many have the Holy Spirit without the evidence of speaking in tongues; which is always available to them who seek & ask the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit desires to help us commune with God through our new heavenly language (tongues) of prayer and praise. Through the Holy Spirit’s help, we are able to talk to God out of the unknown depths of our heart & also pray according to His will without any spiritual, soulful, or natural interference. In speaking our prayer language our mind is not creating the words, it is from the spirit as provided by the Holy Spirit as stated in: 1 Corinthians 14:14 ...

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

As we allow the Holy Spirit to form the words we speak & according to the Bible, we are speaking them directly to God: 1 Corinthians 13:2 ...

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

God always understands what you say even if we do not. But we can also ask God to help interpret the meaning of what is spoken in our prayers … so that we can then pray with your understanding also. I Corinthians 14:13-5 ...
Therefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

After our prayer language is spoken we can ask God to give the interpretation. Speak it forth also as the Holy Spirit ignites. This is how we interpret for our own understanding what the Holy Spirit was speaking through us & or if in the assembly of believers another might interpret. This takes spiritual exercise & a spiritual understanding in the work of the Holy Spirit with us. This is for the body of Christ in fellowship & this is for our own personal communion in Christ in our personal prayers.
We know scripturally that it is not a commandment that we be infilled with the Holy Spirit or speak in tongues. It is not a commandment that we must be infilled with the gift of the Holy Spirit to receive Salvation either. However the infilling with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues is valuable for every believer. And, it doesn’t matter how long you have been a christian believer either.

The purpose of the gift of infilling with the Holy Spirit are many, but it is all toward our service in Christ that He might empower His believers in the work of the Kingdom of God. The infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues does provide an inner power that is not man-made or dependent on man’s aptitude or lack of aptitude. With the evidence of speaking in a new tongue this awesome powerful beautiful gift from the Holy Spirit should be presented to every born again, blood bought believer & follower of Jesus Christ. The gift not only empowers but edifies every believer in the Kingdom of God as in Jude 1:18-25 ...

How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Any believer is accepted when they desire the gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. We are aware the Apostle Paul says that baptism in the Spirit is an act of God by which we become a part of the body of Christ at conversion, so that in his terminology all genuine believing converts have been baptized in the Holy Spirit. Yet there is also no reason to think that even for Paul the baptism in the Holy Spirit was limited to the initial moment of conversion. And studying the book of Acts the infilling in the Holy Spirit is more than a subconscious divine act of regeneration - it is a conscious supernatural experience of power given as a gift by the Holy Spirit directly.

When we take our concordance & look up every text in Acts where the Holy Spirit works in believers, it is never subconscious. In Acts the Holy Spirit is not a silent influence but an experienced power. Believers experienced the infilling of the Holy Spirit. They didn’t just believe it happened because an apostle said so. We have to note also that the gift of the infilling of the Holy Spirit, is preceded by faith after they (the disciples) believed. The wonderful emphasis is that our christianity is not merely an array of glorious scriptures, nor the performance of good works, nor in the rituals or tradition, but it is a life changing experience of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ, knowing that He imparts His dunamis power as a gift for us.

Our Christian life in Christ begins at this point the Holy Spirit indwells us at the time of Salvation. Most pointedly the Spirit of God indwelling the believer at the point of conversion is known as regeneration. In this way we are "born of Spirit" as stated in John 3:6 & we are made new creations & given a new, righteous nature in & this is in addition to our already old sinful nature that does not just disappear, but comes into submission as we mature & grow in Christ. So we do know that we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that comes with our Salvation. So the infilling of the Holy Spirit is the baptism of the Holy Spirit which is a gift offered & given - to be accepted or not.

When we come right down to where the rubber meets the road, everything Christ offers us is a Gift. Eternal life is a gift. Repentance is a gift. Salvation is a gift. Regeneration is a gift. Receiving our new heart is a gift. Grace is a gift etc … Do you see where this is going? The Holy Spirit is a gift. The infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues is likewise a gift. How can we not want to accept what the Holy Spirit has to offer?

This article is probably the least in all articles concerning the gift of being infilled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Not being a theologian, nor a preacher, or teacher; I really have to pray & inquire of the Holy Spirit constantly to be able to even do what little I do in this life that Christ has graciously provided. I write this article purposely in hope to plant a few seeds of faith & to prayerfully inspire the next person to seek YHWH God & ask for this confirmation of the Holy Spirit in their life & to ask for the gift of the infilling of His Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues … for themselves.

My personal proof of the gift that has been given to me with the infilling of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues … is the constant flow of His living witness & empowerment & anointing that only the Holy Spirit provides personally for me each & every day of this life as a born again follower in Jesus Christ my Lord & Savior & soon coming King! May we all press on in our higher calling that is in CHRIST JESUS now & forevermore.

    Philippians 3: 3-14
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

    Amen & Maranatha!
